Higashiyama

Higashiyama is located three kilometers northeast from the center of Kyoto between the Kamogawa River and the surrounding mountains. Wooden buildings line the slopes and give the area its traditional and old-fashioned atmosphere. Shops sell their ware made by craftsmen. An event called Higashiyama Hanatoji takes place in March along, a 5 kilometer path to the mountains that is lit with thousands of white paper lanterns.
The most famous tourist attraction in Higashiyama is Kiyomizu Temple, famous for its elaborate wood construction. The streets are picturesque with charming temples and shrines along the way. Kodaiji, for example, features a beautifully landscaped garden and a bamboo grove.
