The wabi-sabi culture of simplicity and quiet beauty, the spirit of Zen Buddhism, is the keynote of the Higashiyama culture.
There are many temples, shrines, and gardens (karesansui) within walking distance, making it a rich place for strolling.

Shirakawa River

Shirakawa River, which originates between Mt. Hiei and Mt. Nyoigatake, is a river with a total length of about 9.3 kilometers. The willow trees along the river are very beautiful, making it a photogenic spot.

Heian Shrine

Founded in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the transfer of the capital to Heian, this shrine enshrines Emperor Kanmu and Emperor Komei. It is famous for its vast stroll-style pond garden measuring approximately 33,000㎡ (approximately 10,000 tsubo), designed by landscape gardener Ogawa Jihei VII.

Kyocera Museum of Art

The Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art is the oldest existing public art museum building in Japan. It was renovated in 2020 and renamed the "Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art" (commonly known as such).

Shoren-in Temple
Approx. 8-minute walk
It is one of the three gate sites of Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei, the head temple of the Tendai sect. It is also called the "Awata Palace" because Emperor Go-Sakuramachi used Shoren-in as a temporary palace during the great fire of 1788 during the Edo period.

Chion-in Temple
Approx. 10-minute walk
Its official name is Kachozan Chionkyoin Otani-ji Temple, and it is the head temple of the Jodo sect. It was built in the place where Honen, the founder of the Jodo sect, spent the latter half of his life and died.

Gion
Approx. 10-minute walk
This is a historical area that represents Kyoto's geisha district and is steeped in tradition and atmosphere. There are many sights to see that are perfect for a stroll, such as Yasaka Shrine and Hanamikoji.

Nanzenji Temple

One of Kyoto's most famous Zen temples, it is famous for its magnificent Sanmon Gate and the tasteful Suirokaku Waterway, and its beautiful gardens that change with the seasons are also a highlight.

Keage Incline
Approx. 20-minute walk
This 582-meter-long inclined railway was used during the Meiji period and is now a popular cherry blossom viewing spot. In spring, the cherry blossoms that bloom along the tracks are beautiful, making it a perfect spot for a stroll.
